Description

Charcoal has a long history as a drawing medium, used by artists for centuries to explore line, value, and form. This three-day workshop introduces the fundamentals of charcoal through practical exercises and observational studies. Students will work with different types of charcoal, such as vine and compressed, while learning foundational techniques like blending, lifting, and layering to build contrast and texture. Basic principles of light and shadow will be introduced to help develop a sense of volume and depth in drawing. The workshop offers the opportunity to work from still life and natural forms, with a focus on understanding the technical process and richness of charcoal.

What You'll Learn

  1. Discover a variety of charcoals, tools and their use cases
  2. Experiment with different charcoal techniques like controlling different pressures, blending, layering, stippling, erasing, and frottage
  3. Use various blending tools and techniques to achieve value, shading, and smooth gradation
  4. Demonstrate how to use erasers as mark-making tools to create highlights, refine edges, and develop contrast
  5. Compose abstract or realistic drawings from imagination, reference images or observation
