Cybersecurity + Policies

Stay Safe Online: Digital security for your work, learning, and community.

Cybersecurity is everyone’s responsibility. At ECU, we provide tools and practices, such as a two-factor authentication, to help you safeguard your accounts, devices, and personal information. Take a moment to learn the basics, like spotting scams, securing your laptop, and understanding privacy.

Secure your Devices

Whether you’re using a laptop in the library or editing from home, keeping your tech safe is essential. A few simple steps go a long way:

  • Run system updates regularly
  • Install only trusted, approved software
  • Use your ECU login on university devices
  • Turn on your firewall and antivirus
  • Lock your screen if you step away

If you’re working off-campus, make sure your home Wi-Fi is password-protected and avoid saving files on shared or public computers.

Security Guidelines

On Campus

  • Restart your computer frequently, ideally when you arrive and shut it down before you leave

Off Campus

  • Restart your computer at least once a day
  • Connect to ECU VPN as much as possible
  • Need help? Contact the IT Help Desk.

Watch for Scams

Phishing emails attempt to deceive you into disclosing personal information. They often look like messages from banks, friends, or even ECU departments, but they’re fake.

Look out for:

  • Urgent or emotional language
  • Strange sender addresses
  • Suspicious links or attachments
  • Unexpected payment or login requests

If something feels off, don’t click. Report it.

Privacy + Security for Mobile Apps

Some mobile apps collect more personal data than you might expect. Before downloading, check the permissions. Ask yourself: Why does this app need my camera, location or contacts?

When using ECU-issued devices, avoid installing personal apps unless necessary. And if you’re using cloud-based storage, make sure it’s secure and password-protected.
