Financial Support
There are several forms of financial assistance and support available to graduate students at Emily Carr University.
Please note that some eligibility requirements apply to the funding opportunities below. These opportunities are not exhaustive. We encourage all graduate students to do their own research into funding opportunities.

Funding Opportunities
Entrance Scholarships
To recognize high academic achievement and creative potential, we offer graduate entrance scholarships to incoming students who are beginning their study.
Upon acceptance, we offer non-renewable, non-transferable tuition waivers to domestic and international applicants in all graduate programs.
You do not need to apply for an entrance scholarship. All applicants are considered. The selection is made based on the academic and artistic merit of your application.

Canada Student Loans and Provincial Student Loans
The current maximum loan for students receiving funding through B.C. is $5,440 per semester, but each student’s actual eligibility will be determined based upon their individual financial circumstance. Students from other provinces will be subject to the maximums of their home province.
As this funding will not cover both tuition and living expenses, students are encouraged to seek out alternate forms of funding like grants and scholarships by doing an exhaustive internet search. We recommend exploring online scholarship search tools, such as www.studentawards.com, www.scholarshipscanada.com and www.fastweb.com.
It is important to note that some Master of Fine Arts (Low-Residency) students are eligible to apply for government student loans. Contact the Financial Aid + Awards office for more details.

SSHRC Scholarships
The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) is the federal agency that promotes and supports university-based research and training in the humanities and social sciences. Through its programs and policies, the Council enables the highest levels of research excellence in Canada, and facilitates knowledge sharing and collaboration across research disciplines, universities and all sectors of society. All qualified students are encouraged to develop a SSHRC application.
The Canada Graduate Scholarships Program (CGS) Master program offers one-time, non-renewable, twelve-month awards valued at $27,000 each and tenable only at recognized Canadian universities. These are only for applicants who will be registered as full-time students at the Master level in a discipline supported by SSHRC.
The qualifications to apply to this program are as follows:
- The student must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada; and
- The student must be applying for support to pursue your first graduate degree (i.e., master’s or equivalent) and should not have completed more than 12 months of full-time graduate study at the proposed start date of the award. All previous studies at the graduate level, regardless of discipline, will be included in determining eligibility.
For further information visit Canada Graduate Research Scholarship – Master’s program.
Students will receive assistance in developing their SSHRC application as part of the program curriculum.
The Mackenzie King Scholarships
Established as an independent trust under the Will of the last Rt. Hon. William Mackenzie King (1874 – 1950), the Open Scholarship is available to graduates of Canadian universities who pursue graduate study in any discipline in Canada or elsewhere. One Open Scholarship is awarded each year.
