Please join us on March 17 at 7pm for our Twilight Talk with Maru Aponte.

Maru Aponte’s artistic journey unfolds through the dynamic exploration of watercolour as a contemporary medium, challenging its historical associations with leisurely pursuits. Aponte is a Puerto Rican artist working in Vancouver, Canada, where she bridges diverse landscapes to evoke a sense of place. Intense colour emerges as a pivotal element in her work. This saturation reflects the intrinsic qualities of the medium as well as the vibrant palette of Puerto Rico. Her paintings resonate as a visceral representation of the Caribbean experience— cacophonous, and authentic.

Aponte recently graduated with an MFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver. In 2023, she had a solo exhibition at Souvenir 154 in San Juan and was granted the Griffin x ECU Fellowship Studio Award at Griffin Art Projects in North Vancouver. Salt Stains at PaleFire Projects in Vancouver, MoonTalker at Galería Agustina Ferreyra in Mexico City, MagicMaria at Towards Gallery in 2025, and The Sea Is a House at the Art Gallery of Ontario. In May of 2026 she will be the Artist-in-Residence at San Juan 721, Santurce, Puerto Rico.

Directions to IMS: Please enter through the main entrance at 555 Great Northern Way. Turn right and walk down the main hall to the far set of stairs on the right. Walk down to the first floor, and you will see IMS on your right.

This talk is presented by the Audain Faculty of Art at Emily Carr University.
