Curriculum + Courses
This program offers a low-residency experience, combining online synchronous learning in fall and spring terms, with two required up-to-a-month long on-campus residencies in the summer terms.
Term 1 – Fall | Online (12 credits)
Orientation
- GSMA 500 Graduate Seminar I (3 credits, letter grade): This course introduces students to advanced vocabulary and forums to support the development of their research questions and studio practice within the context of larger theoretical, philosophical, social, and political concerns. Students will explore ideas, texts, and discourses that can augment and complicate their artistic practices and develop written interrogations and reflections of those ideas and discourses in relation to their artistic practices.
- GSMA 512 Graduate Forum (3 credits, P/F grade): This forum brings together visiting artists, guest speakers, faculty, and knowledge keepers to weave together discussions and workshops on studio and professional practices. Students will hear from guest speakers who can activate and unpack the realities of being a practicing professional artist in the 21st century.
- GSMA 551 Graduate Studio I (6 credits, letter grade): This course introduces students to graduate-level discourse and engagement that will support the evolution of their practices and research. Focusing on critiques as a site for investigation and inquiry into practice-based and studio learning, students will embark on the creation of new works and projects.
Term 2 – Spring | Online (12 credits)
GSMA 505 Graduate Seminar II (3 credits, letter grade): This course provides students with an evolving series of thematic entry points for rigorous engagement of theoretical, philosophical, social, and political concerns through artistic practice and contextualization. Through writing exercises and workshops, students will work to develop a position paper that discusses the state of their practice in relation to other artists, practices, and ideas alongside anticipated trajectories for their thesis.
GSMA 512 Graduate Forum (3 credits, P/F grade): This forum brings together visiting artists, guest speakers, faculty, and knowledge keepers to weave together discussions and workshops on studio and professional practices. Students will hear from guest speakers who can activate and unpack the realities of being a practicing professional artist in the 21st century.
GSMA 552 Graduate Studio II (6 credits, letter grade): This course continues to build student capacity for advanced discourse and engagement that will support the continued growth of their practices and research. Critiques will serve as a site for collaborative investigation and inquiry into practice-based learning. Students will continue to expand their practice and develop new works and projects.
Term 3 – Summer | On-Campus Residency (12 credits)
GSMA 510 Independent Study (12 credits, P/F grade): With guidance from their supervisor, students embark on a summer-long independent study period that can consist of ongoing project development, field-based research, artist residencies, material explorations, or self-organized coursework, to continue to develop or augment their thesis work.

Term 4 – Fall | Online (9 credits)
GSMA 603 Graduate Seminar III (3 credits, letter grade): This course provides a discussion-driven context for students to further develop the language and contexts required to discuss their thesis work within and beyond academic environments. Students will cultivate more nuanced and rigorous understandings of their own practices, research processes, and positions alongside reviewing the work of their peers through written and dialogical engagements.
GSMA 651 Graduate Studio III (6 credits, letter grade): This course helps to further develop student’s practice-led research through critiques, with an increased focus on their thesis work. Student-led group critiques will serve as a site for collaborative investigation, inquiry, and refinement.
GSMA 001 Graduate Forum (0 credits, ungraded): This forum brings together visiting artists, guest speakers, faculty, and knowledge keepers to weave together discussions and workshops on studio and professional practices. Students will hear from guest speakers who can activate and unpack the realities of being a practicing professional artist in the 21st century.
Performance + Progress Review
Term 5 – Spring | Online (9 credits)
GSMA 600 Graduate Seminar IV (3 credits, letter grade): This course supports the finalization of students’ thesis projects and support materials through to completion by providing a platform for the discussion of their practice, research, and position. By the end of the course, students will have rehearsed their thesis presentations and planned the installation and/or presentation of their thesis work.
GSMA 652 Graduate Thesis (6 credits, P/F grade): In this course, students will work closely with their supervisors to accelerate the development of their thesis project and support materials.

Thesis Exhibition + Thesis Defence
Term 6 – Summer | On-Campus Residency (6 credits)
GSMA 652 Graduate Thesis (6 credits, P/F grade): In this course, students will work closely with their supervisors to accelerate the development of their thesis project and support materials.
Final Exhibition + Thesis Defence
