Description (ECIAD)This course offers an introduction to the history of Western art, focusing on Euro-American traditions of art, the social and cultural practices that defined them, and tools available to help interpret the meaning and function of art works from the past. You will learn about key moments and individuals that have shaped art and architecture over the last 1000 years, examine changing conceptions of the artist, the work of art, and the discipline of art history, and build an awareness of historical precedents that continue to influence contemporary artistic practices. This course is ideal if you want to be better informed when visiting museums or galleries, or who want to understand your own practice in the context of what has come before.
