| Description (ECIAD) | This course offers an introduction to the history
of Western art, focusing on Euro-American
traditions of art, the social and cultural
practices that defined them, and tools available
to help interpret the meaning and function of art
works from the past. You will learn about key
moments and individuals that have shaped art and
architecture over the last 1000 years, examine
changing conceptions of the artist, the work of
art, and the discipline of art history, and build
an awareness of historical precedents that
continue to influence contemporary artistic
practices. This course is ideal if you want to be
better informed when visiting museums or
galleries, or who want to understand your own
practice in the context of what has come before.
