About Dr. Clarkston
Dr. Clarkston engages students as partners in developing courses and learning resources, exemplified in a third-year course on Natural History Collections and Biodiversity Science that aims to braid together Indigenous ways of knowing and Western science. Her communityengaged projects have connected graduate and undergraduate students, museum partners, elementary students, teachers, and community volunteers to create archival seaweed pressings now housed in the Beaty Museum collection.
A highly cited scholar in post-secondary science education, Dr. Clarkston has been recognized with the 2025 Alma Mater Society Open Educational Resources Champion Award and the 2023 UBC Killam Teaching Prize. She is currently co-leading a major renewal of UBC’s First Year Biology Program, advancing innovative, student-centred learning across the curriculum.
