Description

Gallery education is for everyone. This one-day workshop invites participants to explore how galleries can be inclusive spaces for learning, connection, conversation, and discourse. In the morning, we will gather to talk about what galleries are, who they serve, and how people experience art or exhibits in these spaces. You will also explore how such spaces situate themselves within the social and cultural contexts in Vancouver and Canada. In the afternoon, we will take a field trip to a local gallery to look at artworks and exhibits together, reflect on our experience, and consider how these spaces support different ways of seeing and learning. No prior learning in galleries or art education is needed, just curiosity and openness to sharing and learning with others.

What You'll Learn

  1. Describe the purpose and potential of galleries as public learning spaces
  2. Engage in inclusive conversations about artworks and exhibitions
  3. Reflect on how personal and cultural experiences shape the way we see and understand art
  4. Identify elements of gallery design that support accessibility and engagement
