Student Exchanges

ECU partners with art and design schools worldwide through our ECU Student Exchange Program. Each year, ECU students spend semesters abroad, or join us for an enriching semester at Emily Carr University.

Four people stand in a gallery space observing artwork. A woman in a patterned top demonstrates or adjusts part of a hinged panel artwork that reveals colorful abstract designs. One person in a brown sweater and cap looks closely, while two others, one in a white shirt and cap and another in a white blouse and skirt, watch attentively. A bright, bold painting with abstract figures is visible on the wall behind them.

Outgoing Exchange Students

Spend a semester immersed in a new culture and studio practice. Study at one of ECU’s international partner schools in your third year—earning ECU credit while paying ECU tuition.

Applications are competitive and due January 15 each year.

Expand your creative practice, gain global experience and build lasting connections in art and design.

Are you studying at one of ECU’s partner institutions? You may be eligible to join us for one semester through the Student Exchange Program.

Cost, Credits + Financial Aid

The application fee is $25.

While on exchange, you’ll be registered to an “Exchange Course” and continue to pay tuition to ECU equivalent to 15 ECU credits, just like a regular semester.

You are responsible for your travel and living costs (including accommodation) and may be responsible for lab or other fees at your partner school.

If you receive Canadian student loans or financial aid, your eligibility continues during your exchange.

Please note: Students receiving U.S. Direct Loans through the U.S. Department of Education are not eligible for the exchange program.

Responsibilities as an Exchange Student

In addition to paying ECU tuition (15 credits), applying to your partner institution, and covering travel and living costs, you must register in courses that support your academic progress toward your ECU degree.

While abroad, keep a journal and document your works-in-progress with photos. Be prepared to share your experience with faculty and staff upon your return.

After Your Exchange

After your semester abroad, ensure your partner institutions send an official, sealed transcript directly to ECU. This is necessary to evaluate and process your transfer credits. Keeping course descriptions can also help us verify your credit eligibility.

You’ll be asked to share your exchange experience with the ECU community—your insights and perspectives can enrich learning for your peers and instructors.

All returning students must display their work in the Student Exchange Exhibit, held each Fall during the fourth year. You may also be invited to speak at orientation events for future exchange participants.
