Preparing to Come to Canada

Moving to a new country is exciting and full of possibility. This guide will help you prepare for your arrival in Canada and your first days in Vancouver.

It outlines the documents you need to bring, what to expect at the border, the steps to take once you arrive, and how to get settled into life and transportation in the city.

Before You Leave

Make sure you have all the required documents with you in your carry-on luggage. Do not pack these in your checked bags. You must bring:

  • A valid passport or travel document
  • Your Port of Entry Letter of Introduction (if this is your first time entering on a study permit) or a valid study permit (if returning)
  • Your Letter of Acceptance from Emily Carr University (not required for one-term exchange students)
  • A valid Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) for visa-exempt countries, or a valid Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) for visa-required countries. (U.S. citizens and permanent residents are exempt from both eTA and TRV.)
  • Proof of a valid medical exam, if required by your visa (not required for one-term exchange students)
  • Proof of financial support for your studies
  • Any additional documents requested by your visa officer

At the Border and After You Arrive

When you arrive in Canada, present your Letter of Introduction to receive your official Study Permit at the border.

Once you are in B.C., there are a few important steps to complete:

  • Apply for BC Medical Services Plan (MSP) as soon as you arrive. Processing takes about three months, so apply right away. Learn more at Health, Medical + Wellness
  • Get to know more about life in B.C. at the WelcomeBC website
Transportation From the Airport

When you arrive at Vancouver International Airport (YVR), you have several options to reach your destination:

  • Taxi: Available outside arrivals.
  • Rideshare: Uber and Lyft both operate from YVR.
  • SkyTrain (Canada Line): A fast and affordable option that connects YVR directly to downtown Vancouver in about 25 minutes.

Tip: Plan your route before you travel so you know where to get off. Use the TransLink Trip Planner to map your journey.

Getting Around Vancouver

Vancouver has an extensive public transit system (bus, SkyTrain, SeaBus) run by TransLink.

As an ECU student, you will receive the U-Pass BC — a discounted transit pass program for post-secondary students. The U-Pass gives you unlimited travel across Metro Vancouver at a subsidized rate.

Learn about fare zones, pricing, and passes on the TransLink website. Learn more about how to travel to ECU at Visit / Directions.
