International Students

Welcome International
Students!

International students are a vital part of Emily Carr University. This overview shows you what to do first, how to get covered for health care, how to prepare for arrival and where to find work support. If you get stuck, email ECU International Student Advising. We are here to help.

Study Permits + Student Status

You need a valid study permit to study in Canada. Start early and follow your permit conditions.

Health, Medical + Wellness

Health insurance is required in B.C. Apply for B.C. MSP when you arrive and learn about your automatic temporary coverage and ECSU extended benefits.

Tuition + Fees

At ECU, your tuition category is usually based on your citizenship status. Most international students pay international tuition fees, unless they qualify for a specific exception.

You may be eligible for domestic tuition if you are:

  • A Canadian citizen (including dual citizens), permanent resident or refugee in Canada
  • The dependent of a diplomat assigned to Canada
  • Affiliated with a Canadian Indigenous nation (First Nations, Métis, or Inuit)

For other exceptions, see the IRCC website. If you believe you qualify, send supporting documentation to intadvising@ecuad.ca before the tuition fee payment deadline.

How much does it cost?

Resources + Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Updates

Stay informed as rules change. Immigration requirements can shift during your studies, and it’s important to keep up to date with official sources. Here are a few key resources to check regularly:

  • Study permits — rules for moving from secondary to post-secondary studies, and when to apply for a new permit (extension application). You may continue studying while your application is in process, but if it is refused you must stop immediately. Learn more at IRCC Study Permits.
  • Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) — new language requirements are in effect. Learn more at IRCC Study Permits.
  • Consular services — find your country’s consulate in Canada for passports, visas and support.
  • English proficiency upgrading courses – Prospective international students who meet our portfolio and academic requirements but do not meet our minimum English proficiency requirements (IELTS score may not be below 5.5 in any skill area) may apply for the Creative Art Pathway program (CAP).
