Education + Training
To help maintain campus safety, all employees and designated students must complete role-specific safety training. This page details the required online orientation for new employees and WHMIS training for those handling hazardous materials.

New Employee Orientation
Before starting work at ECU, you must complete an online safety orientation. This applies to:
- faculty and sessional faculty
- staff and contracted staff
- student monitors and research assistants
- volunteers
- anyone else as directed
The orientation provides essential information about working safely on campus. After reviewing the content, you’ll need to complete a short quiz.
WHMIS Training
WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) is a federally mandated program that ensures workers know how to safely identify, handle and respond to hazardous materials.
Key topics include:
- how to identify hazards
- how to protect yourself
- how to find product and hazard information
- how to respond to emergencies and spills
WHMIS training is required for all students, faculty and staff who work with or around chemicals and other hazardous materials.
