Bio

Ying-chiu Chan (aka. Chan the Man) began his Industrial Design career in the 80s, providing innovative solutions for consumer products, electronics, novelties, toys, displays and exhibits. He is listed as an inventor in 10 patents and was a featured inventor in an episode of the Sundance Documentary “Quirky” series. Ying-chiu is passionate about contributing his experience to the design community. He began teaching in 1987 at the institution he graduated from (Hong Kong Polytechnic University) and has been instructing at ECU since 1997. In his free time, he enjoys working on his independent comic, Buddysaurus.

Description

Rapid visualization is a systematic and effective approach to drawing creative 3D objects and concepts using traditional or digital media. This technique is widely applicable across various fields including industrial design, communication design, illustration, architecture, furniture design, and interior design. Through a combination of short lectures, demonstrations, discussions, in-class exercises and assignments, you will learn applicable theories of perspective and orthographic projection, as well as principles of highlights, shading and reflection. You will acquire techniques for producing well-proportioned freehand sketches and basic renderings. These skills will help you create, develop, and present your designs effectively, utilizing visual thinking strategies to address various design challenges.

Industrial Design CSID 120 CS26/SP

Description

Discover the process behind crafting the products we use every day. This course provides an introduction to the foundational principles and processes of industrial design. You will embark on a design journey that begins with formulating a design brief, progresses to generating innovative concepts guided by design criteria, and emphasizes user-centred thinking. Engage in basic testing through prototyping with quick mock-ups and models. By the end of the course, you will showcase your designs using both 2D and 3D methods, with sketches and refined mock-ups. Gain practical, hands-on experience and valuable insights into the industrial design process.
