Bio

Reyhan Yazdani is an interdisciplinary artist and designer currently based in Vancouver, the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) people. Her research-driven work migrates between a range of media including works on paper, objects, social invitations and poetry to engage with ontological, material and spatial inquiries around and about themes of exile, language, and diaspora.

Research Interests

Reyhan’s research interests include diaspora, exile, embodied experiences of loss and longing, material exploration, archival research, language, memory, identity, belonging, colonial and imperial violence, questioning Western modes of knowledge production, motherhood, care, cultural resilience and a joyful approach to making.

Description

This course provides an introduction to communication design practices. Students will gain experience with the range of activities that comprise the design process, including generating, refining, and communicating 2D, 3D, and 4D ideas. This course will use lectures, discussions, and assignments to cover design processes, concepts and principles of experience creation, form, meaning and context in design, and visual, verbal, and written communication. Along with an introduction to materiality and hand skills, students will be expected to engage in digital literacy skills in generating, developing, documenting, and presenting outcomes using relevant software.

This studio course expands on the foundational vocabulary, materials, and techniques of contemporary visual art with a specific emphasis on drawing, painting, and sculpture. Through interactive presentations, group discussions, and constructive critiques, students will delve deeply into the essential concepts and materials that underpin artistic practices. Through critical analysis and reflection, students will explore the utilization of these artistic concepts and principles, contextualized within social, historical and contemporary frameworks.
