Bio

Nick uses drawing processes to critically interpret ideas of landscape, seen through the lens of personal experience, narrative and research. His methods consider perceptions, histories and land usage. His illustration and artwork has been been featured in The New York Times and exhibited in venues including the Nelson Museum of Art and History in B.C., the International Print Center in New York and the Minneapolis Institute of Art. He maintains an independent studio practice and also organizes collaborative, interdisciplinary projects.

Research Interests

Nick is currently coordinating a 2-year project, Drawing Ecologies: Toward an Ethics of Care for the Urban Tree Canopy, funded through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). The project teams artists and forestry specialists in collaborative efforts to address the stewardship of regional trees and protect the shrinking urban tree canopy. Drawing-based artwork is inspired through conversations with a range of individuals who offer expertise, experience and perspective around urban forestry.

This course varies in topic from section to section and is repeatable for credit provided the thematic topic has changed. Through artistic production, research, discussions, writing and critique, students are expected to increase their understanding of the content and context of their process and production as well as their knowledge of contemporary art. Critiques and discussions complement studio production.
