Bio

Maggee Day is an artist and educator currently living in Vancouver, on the unceded land of the Coast Salish peoples. Maggee works predominantly in the medium of oil paint. Through a process of reworking her surrounding visuals, she explores relationships between seeing and abstraction, perception and representation, as well as the material potential of paint. She holds an MFA from ECU and a BFA from OCAD University. She has exhibited across Canada and was awarded the 2018 Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant in painting. Recent exhibitions include Passing Notes (2026), and Criss-Crossing (2024) at Equinox Gallery.

Description

This studio course introduces students to conceptual, non-objective, and process-based painting practice and discourse through directed projects. Assignments explore contemporary and historical precedents within the discipline of experimental painting, including processes of collage, abstraction, and the use of non-traditional materials. Through this course, students will gain knowledge of the multiplicity of approaches to constructing a painting and the rich historical development of painting practices. Classes combine discussions, readings, demonstrations, and individual and group critiques.
