Liyang is a designer and educator specializing in the intersections of multilingual typography, visual identity and environmental graphics. As the founding principal of “Design,” a Vancouver-based studio, he partners with a global range of clients, from local boutiques to international corporations.

Research Interests

Liyang's practice is driven by research into scriptual equity and experimental type design using unconventional materials. Whether developing wayfinding systems or cross-cultural identity systems, Liyang is committed to applying these academic insights to functional, inclusive design solutions for both digital and physical spaces.

Description

This course introduces fundamental concepts in grid layout, hierarchy, and typographic systems while introducing principles and practices addressing type on screens. Through exercises, projects and readings, students will develop their typographic skills in light of theories of communication design that have shaped typographic practices.
