Bio

Leonardo is a documentary photographer. His passion for the natural world led him to explore his native Brazil with a camera. His stories focus on our relationship with nature and have been published in National Geographic Brazil, The Globe and Mail and Canadian Geographic and others. He earned a Master of Journalism degree from UBC before joining ECU as a Continuing Studies instructor in 2025.

Description

In an era where social media and cell phone cameras have normalized documenting our daily lives, this course aims to explore the possibilities of capturing space, place, and the everyday in a broader sense. Focusing on the city, its neighbourhoods, communities, and public and private spaces, this course invites you to discover approaches to visual storytelling with the goal of creating thoughtful and meaningful photographic work. In-class discussions will cover ethics, research methods, fundamental lighting principles, and technical strategies essential for completing each individual project. This course may offer project-oriented field trips, either self-guided or in small groups.

Photography CSPH 101 CS26/SP

Description

In this course, you will learn to visually organize the elements within a photographic image. Through lectures, assignments, self-directed projects, and critiques, you will examine the history of composition and its various elements (line, shape, colour, texture, depth, surface, balance, golden ratio), and how inclusions and omissions in the image influence potential interpretations of the work. Additionally, the course will introduce you to the possibilities of producing engaging images. This course does not include darkroom or computer lab access.
