Bio

Joe Gianoglio is a visual artist and designer whose work spans advertising, industrial design, gaming and tech. His practice blends popular culture with serious themes, drawing from over a decade of experience as a concept artist and UI/UX designer. He earned a diploma in Fine Arts from Langara College and completed his Bachelor of Visual Arts at Emily Carr University in 2005. He has worked with clients such as Mattel, Hasbro, and the Jim Pattison Group, while also developing his own independent design practice. Joe joined ECU as a Continuing Studies instructor in 2023.

Research Interests

Joe Gianoglio’s professional practice bridges traditional and digital media, spanning painting, illustration, concept art, and UI/UX design. As a visual artist, his work focuses on vivid storytelling through characters and the diverse worlds they inhabit, often blending popular culture with emotionally resonant themes. In parallel, Joe works as a UI/UX designer in the gaming industry, where he creates intuitive, immersive and user-centric digital experiences. His ability to balance aesthetics with functionality reflects his multidisciplinary approach and deep understanding of narrative and design. Alongside his studio and industry work, Joe brings over a decade of teaching experience, having led community workshops, private school programs, and courses at international and post-secondary institutions. His teaching is rooted in mentorship and creative exploration, empowering students to build strong foundations while pushing their personal expression. Joe continues to explore the intersection of storytelling, interactivity, and visual language in both his professional and personal projects.

You will explore design processes and design principles and learn how images, typography, colour, and composition work together to guide interaction and communicate ideas. Using design thinking and mood boards, you will build your visual identity and create engaging designs in both physical and digital forms. With end users in mind, you will work on real-world design challenges that introduce you to branding, advertising, and content creation. You will strengthen your skills in visual language and creative thinking.
