Bio

Jingqing Jia is a filmmaker, educator and entrepreneur whose interdisciplinary practice spans visual art, design and media. Her teaching and creative work focus on film production, media arts and courses in creative thinking and studio practice. Drawing from her industry experience and artistic perspective, Qing encourages engagement across multiple dimensions of practice, from visual storytelling to cultural and critical reflection.

Research Interests

Jingqing’s research and pedagogy are rooted in a strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. Her research interrogates the decolonization and decentering of film pedagogy and curriculum design, seeking for plural epistemologies, intercultural dialogue and critical engagement. She cultivates student-centered learning environments that empower individuals to engage in critical self-inquiry, fostering the development of artistic identity and expressive autonomy within a supportive pedagogical framework.

Description

Foundation Core is an introduction to a breadth of conceptual, technical and disciplinary approaches that includes 2D, 3D and 4D disciplines. Exploring different forms of conceptual and material-based inquiry, this studio course focuses on the understanding and articulation of core values shared across contemporary art, design, and media disciplines. Foundation Core emphasizes practices and concepts that provide a solid platform for any of the degree-focused studio cores offered in the second semester.

Film + Screen Arts FMSA 205 26/FA

Description

This course explores the fundamentals of analogue and digital cinematography. Students learn the basics of camera operation, light measurement, exposure, visual composition and lighting techniques. Basic electricity and its safe use in support of good and effective lighting will be introduced. Ultimately, students will be prepared for studio and location shooting environments. Class exercises enable students to explore the expressive elements of cinematography: composition, camera placement, camera angles, camera movement, and lens choice, which together with understanding the impact of lighting styles, will give students' the tools to bring a unique and specific look to their productions.
