BA, Animation and Visual Effects for Film and Television

Bio

Gilberto Jimenez is a CG generalist, 3D instructor and filmmaker with over 10 years of experience in animation, TV and visual effects. His work has been featured in international film festivals such as Short Shorts Asia & Japan and Monterrey International Film Festival. His personal work blends animation and mixed techniques and original music to explore social themes. He has worked in animation, live-action and game cinematics at Vancouver studios MPC, IGG, Bardel Entertainment and others.

Research Interests

Gilberto’s research practice explores innovative techniques, technologies and narrative approaches in animation production, with an interest in the intersection of traditional and digital animation practices, like 2D hand-drawn art textures, surfaces and 3D rendering, and the representation of diverse themes and places. He’s interested in pushing the boundaries of animation aesthetics and storytelling conventions and inspiring people to explore new avenues of artistic expression. He is driven by a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of art and stories to effect positive change in society and enrich the lives of individuals, and is dedicated to exploring the ways in which animation and visual effects can serve as a catalyst for this change. Some of his short films have dealt with a combination of social themes through the lens of animation, as a vehicle to sneak through the audience’s defenses, to deliver a story through dark hypnotic metaphors, motifs, and music.

Courses

Course Name Department Course Code Term
3D Computer Animation 3DAN 203 26/FA

Description

This course is a detailed study of character animation principles and techniques for 3D computer animation, covering how to animate a 3D character to create believable character animation. Students are given a series of exercises designed to broaden their understanding of movement, posing, timing, acting, staging, and scene dynamics. An emphasis is placed on understanding body mechanics as integrated with expression and personality in character animation. At the end of the course, students will have a portfolio of pieces ranging from walk cycles to complex dialogue scenes. This course is the first in a series of two 3D character animation courses.

3D Computer Animation 3DAN 300 26/FA

Description

Working individually or as collaborative teams, students engage in ideation processes and experimentation with a range of approaches to articulate stories and the development of a short 3D computer animation project. Students also research historical and visual references to contextualize and support the production's narrative, vision, and goals. By exploring a range of technical requirements, tools, processes, and relevant 3D production pipeline workflows, students submit a proposal for their third year 3D computer animation film / digital media projects that integrates their findings in a statement of intent, production schedule, and CG animation or digital media prototype with sound. The course structure includes lectures, hands-on demonstrations, discussions, presentations and critiques.
