Geoffrey Wallang

Technician, Photography

Bio

Working in the field of art + design is Geoffrey's fuel to create things that help him convey the dichotomy of our existence and it also gives him a sense of freedom from the mundane. One of his main takeaways in this environment is to engage with purposeful work and not be involved in a rat race.

Research Interests

Working with students helps keep Geoffrey on his toes as each one brings their own unique set of challenges, perspective and understanding of their own artistic endeavours. This juxtaposes well with his own creativity and he is able to navigate his support according to their needs. In his personal practice, he works mainly with an historical process called wet plate collodion ("photography's antique technology"), where he mixes his own chemistry to make images on either aluminium or glass plates (as negatives). The versatility of this process gives a real sense of creation as it is based strongly in the craft and chemical reactions of the materiality. The hands-on aspect of it also gives hi an artistic touch over the final outcome; this process translates reality into something new to the viewer.
