Bio

Elena is a visual artist and educator who has been exhibiting since 1980. Her work is in collections in Canada, the USA, Wales and England. Elena earned diplomas in fine arts and graphic design from Kootenay School of Art in 1981. In 2010, while working as an illustrator, designer and instructor at BCIT, Elena finished her BFA at ECU and then began teaching in the school’s Continuing Studies department. Elena teaches painting and drawing courses, inspired and informed by her own practice and her students.

Description

Soft pastels are known to be richly pigmented yet blendable and forgiving, making them ideal for beginners who would like to explore intense, colourful artwork with a versatile application. This three-day workshop will guide you through foundational chalk pastel techniques that will help develop your technical skills. Through creative exercises and experimentation, you will learn how to use different pressures and techniques to achieve fine detail, smooth gradients and dynamic textures. A variety of pastel tools will be introduced, allowing students to discover what best supports their creative goals. Emphasis will be placed on building confidence while exploring mark-making and composition.

Nature illustration is a valuable medium for appreciating and understanding the richness and diversity of the natural world. Through close observation and hands-on practice, learn to translate natural environments, flora and fauna into dynamic illustrations. Drawing CSDR 110 CS26/SU

Description

Expand your drawing practice using the expressive medium of pen and ink. Focusing primarily on different applications of India and Chunghua black ink, brushes, nibs and calligraphy tools, you will learn to create a range of work from photo-realistic to abstract and everything in between. Experiment with ink and wash as you explore elements and principles of art including tone, texture, line, gesture, proportion and visual balance. By the end of this course, you will have gained experience with a range of possible mark-making techniques using different types of inks and tools.
