Bio

Dr. Poh Tan holds a PhD in Experimental Medicine from UBC and a second PhD in Educational Theory and Practice from SFU. Her work emphasizes the relationships between science and art for teaching and learning. She is the founder and CEO of STEMedge Inc., advising on STEM educational strategies, a two-time TEDx speaker, a Canadian delegate to the UN's Commission on the Status of Women, a volunteer at Science World and a research fellow at the Vancouver Botanical Gardens Association.

Research Interests

With a background in stem cell biology and experimental medicine combined with a deep understanding of pedagogy and curriculum in science education in the arts, her primary research interest is in decentering dominant ways of teaching and learning science in the classroom through other teaching frameworks. Specifically, Poh is interested in weaving arts and science with Indigenous and Western science.

Description

In this introduction to the natural sciences, students will examine how scientific methods are understood and applied. Specifically, students will discuss different conceptual approaches to understanding the physical and biological sciences. In addition to topics drawn from biology and biodiversity, subjects may also include genetics, genomics, informatics, biochemistry as well as geology, ecology, earth sciences.
