Christian Huizenga

Bio
Christian Huizenga is an artist, architect and filmmaker who works in sculpture and large-scale public installations. He engages with ideas of citizen-initiated architecture and craft and the merger of the built environment with nature. Christian’s work activates spaces through the creation of objects that invite cross-cultural contact and collaboration. He holds a BFA from ECU and a Master of Architecture from the University of Toronto. He has exhibited across Canada and has lectured in Toronto and Saudi Arabia.

Research Interests
Christian’s research focuses on the concept of Plein Air Architecture, a form of site-specific, citizen-initiated architecture and design. In 2021, he founded The School of Direct Experience (SoDE), a social practice art project that uses roaming workspaces to offer hands-on learning in a dynamic and accessible environment. SoDE has regularly hosted workshops at the Audain Art Museum and collaborated on various public art projects throughout British Columbia.
