Description

This course explores the formal and aesthetic possibilities of diverse types of kilns and firings where various atmospheres in the kiln affect the final qualities of the work. Objects will be made using various clays and building methods, which may include throwing and traditional hand building techniques with burnishing. Types of firing may include gas reduction; saggar; raku and post-firing reduction; wood and salt firings, in a wide variety of kilns. Demonstrations, presentations, field trips are regularly scheduled. Assigned and self-directed projects are developed and discussed in critiques.
