Bio

Jeffrey Swartz is a critic and curator in contemporary art and design and a professor of the history and theory of art and design at ESDi Higher School of Design, EINA University School of Design and Art as well as at ECU. He has published peer-reviewed work and critical writing in journals, magazines and as book chapters. He is a publisher, editor and professional translator and curator of exhibitions in Spain, France and Canada.


Research Interests

Jeffrey’s research interests include art, design and radical politics; critical and speculative design; contemporary art; culture policy and the political economy of art; urban planning, cities and cultural production.

The issues and readings will vary but students will gain a better understanding of contemporary thought and methods in philosophy, history, or literature, especially as they relate to critical issues in design.

Description

This course introduces students to the multiple methods of conducting design research for facilitating and enhancing people's experiences of designed images, artefacts, spaces, environments, and interfaces. Topics include: marketing, ethnography, cultural probes, scenario development and testing, persona development and testing, journaling, cognitive mapping, empathy tools, body storming, experience prototyping, participatory design research, and ethics.
