Policies Associated With Changing Majors

Due to limited space and facilities, students are normally expected to complete their degrees within four years of full-time study. However, the university recognizes that students sometimes discover a more suitable major and may feel the need to change. In such cases, the following policies apply: 

• Acceptance for change of major applicants is determined by ranking students based on their cumulative GPA and available spaces in each major
• Changing your major is a competitive process, and not all qualified applicants can be offered a seat 
• Changes of major apply to the fall semester only. Changes are not processed for the spring semester 
• Students may request a change of major no more than twice during their time at ECU 
• Students who have started the fourth year in their current major are not eligible to change majors 
• Students who change majors will typically need to restart at a level below senior standing and must complete all core courses required for the new major
• Application decisions are typically communicated by mid-March

Following the assessment of all applications, decisions should be communicated to applicants by mid-March.
