Bio

In addition to working in education, Martin Rose has been part of the animation community for many years, primarily in the cultural sector. He was involved with numerous projects at the National Film Board of Canada, both as a director and animator, and for a three-year period, as the interim animation producer at the NFB’s studio in Vancouver.


Research Interests

Martin is interested in production methods that integrate digital technology with tactile materials, when software meets paper and paint, cutouts and three-dimensional stop-motion puppets. He encourages students to experiment, to involve hybrid methodologies, evolve innovative ideas and to uniquely envision story structures for their creative projects. Through exploration and practice, students then discover approaches that are meaningful to them, as they seek ways to produce compelling forms of expression. With his own practice, Martin is an independent animation filmmaker who also utilizes both traditional and experimental techniques. His projects take on poetic forms that interpret connections between people living in urban neighbourhoods. The intention is to portray notions of sustainability, cohabitation with nature, re-wilding and watershed restoration, narratives that support biodiversity, conservation and eco-friendly initiatives.

Description

Continuing with the study of essential animation principles, students work at creating sophisticated movement phrases through a series of short assignments that focus on drawn animation. Students practice developing their animation by iterative refinement based on class feedback, progressing from rough to polished stages of production. An emphasis is placed on acting, staging, and timing. In addition, students employ film grammar, develop storyboards, and create short narratives by linking characters' motives and movement sequences with a variety of scenes, shots, camera angles, and editing points. A variety of relevant films are presented, relating contextually to lecture topics.

2D Animation 2DAN 211 26/SP

Description

In conjunction with Animation II, students continue to learn digital production methods. In addition, individuals are introduced to experimental two-dimensional techniques, and interactive animation. Key aspects of filmmaking like pre-production research, animatics or Leica reels, digital video editing, and sound design are covered. Students spend concentrated periods of time on projects that represent the complex nature of the medium.

2D Animation 2DAN 310 26/SP

Description

Students will undertake the production of a semester-long animation project, either individually or as collaborative teams. They will carry their concepts and vision through the stages of pre-production, production and post-production, creatively and practically engaging their animation skills and advancing the level of their craft. Students will present regularly on their progress and participate in peer reviews in order to give and receive feedback on production progress, artistic direction, and technical details of their work. Concurrently, students will explore and develop material for their 4th year project, resulting in a proposal to be presented at the end of the semester.
