Bio

prOphecy sun is an artist, movement, video, soundmaker and mother of three. Her practice celebrates the in-between where art, performance and life overlap. They have a PhD in Philosophy in Arts + Technology from Simon Fraser University and held a Jack and Doris Shadbolt Fellowship in Arts and the Humanities. prOphecy appears in music festivals, conferences and galleries. She has written on sound design, installation, performance, media arts and domestic spheres for Routledge Press, Taylor & Francis and MIT Press.

Research Interests

prOphecy's recent research has focused on ecofeminist perspectives, co-composing with voice, objects, surveillance technologies and site-specific engagements along the Columbia Basin, Lower Mainland regions and beyond. Explore her work at https://prophecysun.com.

Description

In this course students will investigate a specific topic in interactive and social media arts analysis, such as digital narrative, gaming, locative media, digital poetry and literature, database aesthetics, hacktivism, digital intervention, net art, robotics, bioart, digital ecoart, virtual environments, augmented reality, and systems art. Readings, videos, participation in peer group and class discussion, as well as team presentations, will encourage and compliment individual student research.

Description

This course is comprised of a regular program of visiting speakers including artists, critics, curators and cultural practitioners who will weave together presentations, discussions, and/or workshops on studio and professional practices. The speakers will exemplify the varied subject positions, content, methodologies, and a range of rhetorical and presentation strategies. This course will give students exposure to a broad range of practitioners in the field of contemporary art. There will be an emphasis on guest speakers who model a diverse range of art practices and who can unpack the realities of being a practicing professional artist in the 21st century. Class time will be spent attending these talks, and participating in other activities which may include the following: engaging with visitors in Q&A, workshops, studio visits, critiques, field trips, community-based activities and/or facilitated break-out groups. This course is pass/fail.
