Bio

Joni is an educator, illustrator and writer whose current work focuses on self-reflexive visual narratives. She sees them as a reasonable means of disseminating a message and has created over 20 comics, zines and children’s books. Her practice also includes creating sculptural illustrations and installations. Joni earned a BFA in Illustration and an MFA from ECU and joined ECU as a Continuing Studies instructor in 2018.

Description

Character concepts are used in a wide range of visual media and industries, from graphic novels and comic books to video games and animation. Apply your illustration and storytelling skills to capture the personality, essence and story of a character from archetype to storyboarding in this pivotal illustration course. Through assignments, case studies and presentations, you will learn a range of processes, methods and techniques used by contemporary concept artists to generate memorable characters. Guided through prompts and step by step instruction, this course will provide you with skills to both follow a preexisting creative vision or design brief and develop your own unique character concepts.
