Bio

Avery Shaw is an Interdisciplinary Designer whose work spans product design, manufactured goods, research and conceptual design. She holds an MDes in Design from ECU and a BA in Art History and English from the University of Guelph. Avery has over a decade of experience working for international brands as a product designer and developer, focusing on products for the home and designing for commercialization. She brings expertise in designing products across many categories, including furniture, outdoor, decor and textiles.

Research Interests

In her personal practice, she uses a process-led approach to guide her work. Using different materials and mediums, she explores themes around the home and sustainability, such as empathy towards objects, concepts of built/natural environment, and how our views of the world influence our habits and our space. In the classroom, she combines her industry experience with her research in sustainability to encourage approaches to design driven by curiosity and care while preparing students to navigate a career in Product Design.

Description

This introductory Core Studio acquaints students to key aspects of Industrial Design. Students will learn fundamental design principles, diverse materials, issues of sustainability, fabrication and making, while simultaneously exploring varied social and cultural contexts of industrial design. Students will engage in all aspects of the design process: research, analysis, sketching and iterative prototyping, and design development alongside presentation techniques in order to meet the required studio objectives, through both individual and group projects. Discussions and critical reflection throughout the development of their studio project work help students make informed design decisions.
