Research Interests

Julie’s research and teaching centre on creative inquiry, critical exploration and interdisciplinary approaches within her studio practice and pedagogy. She has held faculty positions at various institutions, mentoring emerging artists and fostering meaningful engagement with ceramics and other material-based practices. Her approach merges craft, dialogue, and exploration with a hands-on, process-driven methodology, guiding students to situate their work within broader artistic and cultural contexts. Building on these principles, her research examines the relationship between material, form, and perception in art and design. She investigates how materials construct visual and spatial experiences, engaging with both traditional and experimental approaches to ceramics. Her work explores how material choices shape interpretation, intersecting craft, sculpture, and design. Through this lens, her practice considers the evolving role of materiality in contemporary practices.
