Indigenous Learner Pathway Information
Prospective students of Indigenous (Aboriginal) ancestry who are age 19+ and do not meet the high school or post-secondary transfer requirements can apply through this pathway. It is intended to improve access and support for important and under-served populations.
- Applicants should apply as a “high school applicant” through the same EducationPlannerBC process as described on How to Apply.
- Declare and provide transcripts for any high school or post-secondary study you have attempted. Where possible, we first try to admit you through the normal pathway.
- Submit two (2) letters of reference from persons able to assess your potential for success.
- Submit a personal statement outlining your academic and artistic goals.
- Applicants must submit a portfolio.
The letters of reference and personal statement should be addressed to the “Aboriginal Admissions Committee” and be uploaded with the EducationPlannerBC application, sent by email to admissions@ecuad.ca, or mailed to Emily Carr Admissions, 520 East 1st Avenue, Vancouver, BC V5T 0H2.
Applicants are considered based on their educational background, cultural knowledge, work experience, academic goals, personal achievements and current artistic portfolio. Applications are reviewed by the Aboriginal Admissions Committee. This committee has the authority to select students for admission and determine if any special conditions are necessary, such as course load limitations, tutoring support, English upgrading, or peer mentoring.

Post-Secondary Transfer Academic Requirements
You are a “transfer” applicant if you are currently attending or have attended a post-secondary institution (i.e. college, university, polytechnic). Applicants are required to disclose all post-secondary studies during their application to Emily Carr University. If you have never attended post-secondary, you should apply as a high school applicant.
Applications are accepted to all ECU undergraduate programs. Capacity for second (2nd) year and third (3rd) year programs varies widely by program, and may be extremely limited in certain programs. Applicants are strongly encouraged to consult with a recruitment coordinator prior to applying for admission. Learners must complete at least one-half (50%) of their program at Emily Carr to earn a degree.
Visit Transfer Credit + Prior Learning for information on receiving recognition for prior college/university courses completed.
If You’re Currently Attending College or University
You may apply for admission to Emily Carr University while you’re in post-secondary studies and qualify for conditional admission. We can use the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of your completed courses to qualify you for conditional admission. You must submit a final, official transcript before your ECU program begins.
Academic Requirements
Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.0 (on ECU’s Grading Scale) on all attempted undergraduate studies to be considered for admission. Applicants who have completed fewer than fifteen (15) credits (one semester of full-time study) of post-secondary education will be considered on their high school credentials.
Applicants whose CGPA is below 2.0 or whose transcripts indicate a requirement to withdraw from studies (i.e. expulsion) are generally not considered for admission to ECU and are encouraged to pursue studies outside ECU to raise their GPA or to resolve their mandatory withdrawal with the issuing institution.
Admission to Emily Carr University is highly competitive and not all applicants who meet our academic requirements will receive an offer of admission.
Irreplaceable Documents
Some countries or schools only issue one copy of a transcript or mark sheet to a student. If you have transcripts or mark sheets that cannot be re-issued or replaced, you may:
- Bring the original, official document(s) into ECU Student Services. We will make a verified copy of the document and return the original to you.
- Have a certified copy of each original, official document made and notarized by an accredited notary public. All pages must be stamped or sealed by the notary. The portfolio counts for the majority of an applicant’s overall admissions score.
Submission
Portfolios must be submitted through the ECU Admissions Portal after applying for admission through EducationPlannerBC. Portfolios are not accepted through email, in-person or other platforms.
Portfolio Tips
Your portfolio is a way to show us your ideas, your process and your best work. Explore our tips below for putting together a strong portfolio.
Foundation Year (First Year) Applicants
Please see below for portfolio requirements for students applying directly from high school with no previous post-secondary (college/university) education, as well as mature students, home-based learners and the Indigenous learner pathway.
1. Examples of Your Creative Practice (Artwork)
Artwork Submission Options
Show us examples from your creative practice – the artwork which you create. The medium or media you work should influence which format(s) you choose to upload. Select one of the options below:
Option One: Up to ten (10) minutes of time-based media (video/audio).
Option Two: 10 to 20 single image files (one example per file)|
Option Three: Up to five (5) minutes of time-based media (video/audio) + up to ten (10) single image files
Requirements
- All works must be original and made by you and should have been created within the last two years
- For time-based media (video/audio) created by multiple artists, describe your role in the file description field
File Formats
- Images: JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIF, TIFF, BMP, TFA file formats, each up to five megabytes (5MB) in size. Files larger than 1280 × 1280 pixels will be downsized by the platform.
- Video: M4V, MOV, MP4, WMV, FLV, ASF, MPG, MPEG, MPV file formats, each up to 250MB in size.
- Audio: MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC file formats, each up to 30MB in size.

- Linked (streaming) media is accepted from Vimeo, YouTube, SoundCloud or Sketchfab. Each link must be to an individual file (playlists + collections are not accepted) and publicly accessible. YouTube links should allow embedding.
Recommendations
- ECU is looking for your unique perspective, not derivative/copied styles or intellectual property (e.g. characters) from established sources.
- Submit work completed within the last two years
- Identify two works which you feel best reflect your current creative voice in the file description field with the word “spotlight”
- Include at least one example of work made from observation. This could be a drawing, sound piece, video, or other medium that documents something you’ve seen, heard, or experienced directly. Use simple, immediate tools like pencil and paper or digital tablet rather than polished filters or effects. The goal is to show how you notice, interpret and express the world around you in your own way.
2. Process Documentation
Next, we would like to see how you get from concept/idea to your finished project. Submit one item showing your creative process: A PDF (up to 10 pages) or a video/audio clip (up to 3 minutes). Examples include:
- Sketchbook pages
- Project documentation
- A process journal
- Rough and early-stage clips
- Storyboards
- Writing that explains your iterative process

- Show how you’d collaborate. In one original image or a short (20-second) media clip, show us how you imagine working with others in an artistic way.
- Reflect on your environment. Create something that responds to the place where you live—your home, your neighbourhood, or your geographic surroundings. Use any medium you like.
- Make a portrait. Create a portrait of someone you know. It can be realistic, abstract, or symbolic—whatever best captures your connection to them.
- Tell a story in three images. Using three original images, tell a visual story that reveals something about your creative self.
3. Writing Assignment
Respond to one of the following prompts, in 100 to 250 words:
- Write a review. Share your take on a creative work: an art exhibition, film, ad, photo, piece of furniture, building, website, book, music, designed object or anything else that interests you.
- Why do you make? What drives your creative work? Tell us what motivates you to create and to explore material processes.
- Describe a past project. Choose a finished artwork and walk us through how you made it. What surprised you along the way? What unexpected challenge did you face?
- Who inspires you? Tell us about an artist, designer or media maker whose work you admire. What do you connect with in their practice, and how does it influence your own?
- Tell a short story. Write a paragraph that captures a brief scene or narrative—fiction or non-fiction.
