Description

Procedural art allows designers to move beyond modelling a single unique object and begin building a design system. Working with 3D animation software Houdini, this course explores the procedural system as a collaboration between the medium and the artist that can empower creativity, iterations and rapid prototyping. Building off essential skills learned in Introductory Houdini, you will dig deeper into fields of creative interest, be introduced to examples from a wide range of procedural effects and technical approaches, and create dynamic procedural and abstract art. Core topics of this course include procedural thinking, generative design, particle magic, abstract effects, and basic coding and math. This is not an introductory course; prior experience with Houdini is required.

What You'll Learn

  1. Demonstrate efficient setup of a Houdini scene, from asset generation to settings lights and rendering an image
  2. Demonstrate how to use and adjust attributes and different noises.
  3. Show how to source particle simulations efficiently, guide them and render them.
  4. Show how to set up volume simulations and to drive particles with the volume.
  5. Create abstract generative sketches using VEX, Houdinis expression language
  6. Create a final procedural sketch demonstrating knowledge of Houdini’s various procedural approaches.
