What You’ll Learn

Students in ECU’s Photography program explore image-making as an expanded field, balancing in-depth technical skills with critical, theoretical frameworks that deepen students’ artistic vision and prepare them to contribute their distinctive voices to contemporary visual culture.

Core studio courses establish a strong foundation of both analogue and digital photography, as well as studio lighting. Electives in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year give students the opportunity to experiment with advanced post-production, installation, performance and video, or immerse themselves in thematic courses.

Complimentary coursework in critical studies and media history help students to locate their artistic practice within different art historical contexts and discourses. Through hands-on projects, collaborations and professional development led by a faculty of working artists, students graduate with a strong portfolio and a deep understanding of photography’s evolving role in art and culture.
