Student Tax Forms
Each year, Emily Carr University issues tax forms to students who study or work here. These forms help you complete your Canadian income tax return:
- T2202 – shows the tuition you paid and how long you were enrolled
- T4A – shows scholarships, bursaries or awards you received
- T4 – shows wages if you worked at ECU as a student employee
All tax forms are posted online in MYEC by the by the end of February for the previous tax year (January to December).

How to Get Your Forms
- Log in to MYEC Student Tax Forms with your ECU credentials and download your forms.
- If you forget your password or cannot log in, follow the password reset instructions or contact the ITS Help Desk.

ECU staff cannot give tax advice. For help filing your taxes:
- Visit the CRA’s Students and Income Tax page
- Book an appointment at a free CRA tax clinic
T2202 – Tuition and Enrolment Certificate
You’ll receive this form if you paid more than $100 in tuition for courses during the tax year. It shows the total tuition and fees you can claim when filing your taxes, and the number of months you were enrolled. Students under 16, or students in short courses lasting less than three weeks, will not receive a T2202.

Students with a Disability

A student is also considered a full-time student if they were enrolled in a qualifying educational program and one of the following situations apply:
- you attended part-time and are eligible for the disability tax credit for the year
- you attended part-time and had, in the year, a mental or physical impairment certified in a letter by a medical doctor, nurse practitioner, optometrist, audiologist, occupational therapist, psychologist, physiotherapist, or speech language pathologist, but not eligible for the disability tax credit.
The educational institution is certifying that the student, although enrolled on a part-time basis, is taking courses from a qualifying educational program.
International Students
International students studying in Canada my have to file a Canadian income tax return. If you have earned income in Canada, you will need to file a tax return and submit your Social Insurance Number (SIN) or Individual Tax Number (ITN) (see below) to ECU on Self-Service.

Form 1098-T
ECU does not issue Form 1098-T. As a Canadian institution, ECU only provides Canadian federal tax receipts – T2202 Tuition and Enrolment Certificate. For US tax filing, please use the T2202 form.
Continuing Studies Students
Continuing Studies students who only registered in a course/courses where the duration was less than 3 consecutive weeks will not be eligible for a T2202. Students in the Teens programs who were under 16 years old at the end of the previous calendar year will not be eligible for a T2202 that year.
T4A – Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards
If you received a bursary, scholarship, award, or tuition waiver, you will be issued a T4A if the categories combined totals $500 or more. The form shows the total amount you received in the calendar year. For more information related to the T4A form, visit this Canada Revenue Agency page: Line 13000 – Other Income
T4 – Employment Income
If you worked for ECU as a student employee, you’ll receive a T4 slip. It shows your wages and any taxes that were deducted.
Social Insurance Number (SIN) or Individual Tax Number (ITN) Requirements
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requires a Social Insurance Number (SIN) or Individual Tax Number (ITN) on all T2202 and T4A forms. An ITN is issued to individuals who are not eligible for a SIN and are considered non-residents for tax purposes.
Under Subsection 237(1) of the Income Tax Act, you must provide your SIN/ITN, upon request, to the preparer of tax slips. More information is available on the CRA website (search “Subsection 237(1) CRA”).

Submitting your SIN or ITN to ECU
- Your SIN/ITN will be stored securely and used only for federally approved purposes.
- If you haven’t provided it before, you can enter it once through Self-Service.
- CRA does not require amended T2202s if your SIN/ITN changes after filing. ECU will not reissue forms, but you should still update Self-Service for future years.
- For security reasons, do not email your SIN/ITN.
How to Submit
- Log into your Self-Service account. If you need help, follow the login instructions or contact the ITS Help Desk.
- From the main menu, select Social Insurance Number (SIN) Information.
- If a number is already on file, only the last three digits will display. If these do not match your SIN/ITN, email:
- Undergraduate + Graduate: reghelp@ecuad.ca
- Continuing Studies: csreghelp@ecuad.ca
- If no number is on file:
- Select Edit (pencil icon).Enter your nine-digit SIN/ITN carefully.
- Click Submit SIN. A confirmation message will appear once it’s saved.
Continuing Studies Students
- If your course lasted less than three consecutive weeks, you are not eligible for a T2202 and do not need to provide a SIN.
- Students in Teens programs who were under 16 years old at the end of the tax year are not eligible for a T2202 for that year.
International Students
- If you live in Canada or the U.S., ensure your ECU records list a Canadian or U.S. mailing address.
- If you are a non-resident who has not earned income and are not filing taxes in Canada, you do not need to provide a SIN or ITN.
- If you earned income in Canada and must file a Canadian tax return, you are required to provide a SIN or ITN. Please refer to this Government of Canada page for more information: Are You an International Student Studying in Canada?
Keep your Address Updated
The address on your ECU record at the time of preparation of the tax forms will appear on your tax slips. Update your address in Self-Service by February 1 if it is missing or incorrect. Please update international addresses to a Canada or US address. To update, go to MYEC > My Links > User Profile.
As the CRA does not require address changes to be amended on tax forms after submission, ECU will not be amending tax forms for address changes.
