Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour Student Award Program
In Fall 2020, Emily Carr University created the Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour Student Award Program to increase financial support for students identifying as Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour through the generous support of our donors.
We are pleased to report that in November, we began disbursing funds for Indigenous students through the Aboriginal Awards Program. In March, additional designated funds will be made available for students who are Black or People of Colour.
Thank you to every donor who has supported this program.
After the spring bursary disbursement, the fund will be almost exhausted. We are asking for your help to provide greater financial support for students who, historically, have faced systemic imbalances that have prevented them from receiving equal opportunities for success.
For Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour, accessing funds to support their education can greatly affect their earning ability. Attaining a university degree is a key factor in achieving anything close to earnings parity (when compared to White Canadians). According to Statistics Canada (see links below) the earning gap, which is slowly closing, is still significant and we are a long way from parity. For those without a university education, the numbers are even more dismal. Hopefully, when the 2021 census is published we will see a further closing of the gap.
No one of us can change a system alone, but today, your gift to the Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour Student Award Program means you recognize the existence of systemic imbalances and want to be part of a new future that is fair and equitable for everyone.
Today, your donation can help a student who has faced adversity secure a brighter future for themselves through education, and show that you stand with our student community of Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour.
Here's how you can help:
- Make a one-time or monthly donation through CanadaHelps.org.
- Make a gift of securities through Canada Helps or contact the Advancement Office for more information.
- Make a donation by cheque or credit card by downloading the donation form and mailing it with your payment.
Thank you for supporting our Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour student community!
