2nd community update
Join us this November for a series of thought-provoking events that explore the intersection of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) with art and design practices. Open to all students, faculty, and staff.

This fall, we invite the university community to join a series of events that explore the potential of collaborative art and design practices in shaping Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). Each session will offer unique perspectives on the transformative role of creative communities in addressing structural inequities. These events, designed for faculty, students, and staff, seek to bridge the gap between institutional goals and real-world impacts, inviting everyone to participate in the ongoing conversation.

Participants are invited to join in person or online. For Zoom access, please send an email to Ece Arslan at earslan@ecuad.ca

We look forward to engaging with you at these events!

Event Details:

November 5: imagined, unimagined, unimaginable with Tara Wren

Location: B3130, 11:30 AM to 12.30 PM

Explore the disconnect between the institutional perception of the "imagined" student and the diverse realities of our student body. Building on "The Archive of the Invitation" and the essay "The Unimagined Student and Frameworks of Sufficiency," this workshop will use group discussions and visual activities to identify how current structures serve—or fail—different students. A world-building exercise will help participants envision inclusive practices that foster welcoming and joyful learning environments. The workshop is neurodiverse-friendly and disability-led, with ongoing participant feedback encouraged to enhance accessibility.

November 18: Oracular Visions with Eliza Swann, Genevieve De Leon, and Gwenessa Lam

Location: IMS D1400, 11:30 AM to 1.30 PM

This panel and workshop delve into divination, nonlinear time, and embodied knowledge from various cultural perspectives, challenging Western frameworks of thought. Featuring research on mirrors, the session includes a workshop on scrying led by Eliza Swann, allowing participants to explore reflective and speculative practices. The event will conclude with a discussion on aspects of mirroring, ritual, and fostering an EDI framework within educational settings.

Note that workshop portion requires registration and the seats are limited!
For registration, send an email to Ece Arslan at earslan@ecuad.ca

November 26: Rage, Justice, and Revolution with Sajad Soleymani Yazdi, Kara Abdolmaleki, and Banafsheh Mohammadi

Location: B3130, 11:30 AM

This panel will focus on the transformative power of anger in driving social change. Dr. Mohammadi will discuss anger as an anticolonial and feminist methodology through artivism, followed by Dr. Yazdi’s insights on its implications for transformative justice and institutional EDI practices. Dr. Abdolmaleki will reflect on the "Women, Life, Freedom" movement in Iran, highlighting the historical significance of rage in shaping EDI discourses and policies.
