The whole ECU community is so proud of the talented, hardworking graduates of Emily Carr, who crossed the stage at the Chan Centre this week!

Convocation celebrates a conclusion to the hard work and sacrifice each of our students has made in their academic journeys. Our ECU graduates have shown extraordinary creativity, perseverance and innovation in these past years and have emerged stronger with world-class skills acquired at ECU.

Time and again, our graduates responded to adversity with resilience, empathy and dedication and have consistently proven themselves to be leaders among their peers.

Along with viewing the ceremony on the Convocation webpage, we’ve recapped some major milestones of this year’s ceremony and upcoming alumni perks for our graduates.

Highlights from Convocation 2023!

This year’s ceremony was joyous and celebratory, with heartfelt speeches from ECU Chancellor Carleen Thomas and Provost Trish Kelly, farewell remarks from departing ECU President Gillian Siddall, and witty recollections from student speakers Giulia de Oliveira Borba (MDes), Leea Nadeer Contractor (MDes) and Sophia Sumin Mok (BMA, 3D Computer Animation).

Artist and multi-media sensation Zadie Xa (BFA, 2007) received this year’s Emily Award, whose creative pursuits in the arts, media and textiles have brought honour to the university. Ceramicist and mixed-media artist Glenn Lewis and photographer and curator Paul Wong received Honorary Degrees for their historic contributions to the global art and design community.

The Governor General’s Gold and Silver Medal winners were Jessica Bonin and Azadeh Mehryar for their exceptional academic achievements in their Master's and Bachelor's degree programs. The Lieutenant Governor’s Medal recipient was Kashish Hukku Jani, in recognition of her excellent academic record and contributions to the life of her institution and community.

Our graduates now join a thriving alumni network of some of the most influential and important creatives working in the art world. We cannot wait to see what they create!
