This GIF-like film + sculpture uses the representation of masturbation to respond to the bias towards gestural familiarity of phallic representation, as well as the romanticized display of female masturbation in the media prioritizing the male gaze.
About the Artist
Raised on Cortes Island and now residing in Vancouver, Barton uses a broad range of mediums. Her surreal and playful works prompt questions while tongue-in-cheek themes cause mischief. She investigates gender, class and modernity within the anthropocene.
