Using Zoom and Teams for teaching and learning

Zoom

Zoom is a video-conferencing software with built in tools and features like screen sharing, automatic captioning, break-out rooms and more. All ECU employees and students get a basic Zoom license to use for meetings or online synchronous course delivery.

  • Schedule and host video-conferences, meetings and classes
  • Connect using your browser or Zoom app on your computer or phone, or calling in with your phone (audio only)
  • Share your screen, audio and video
  • Record meetings to your computer or to the cloud
  • Add live automatic transcription
  • Create Breakout rooms for group discussions
  • Share a live whiteboard

ECU is using Zoom’s Canadian data residency, meaning registration information, cloud recordings and connection metadata is stored on servers in Canada. However, when connecting with clients outside of Canada data can be tracked and collected by servers abroad.

Teams

Note: Zoom is still the recommended app for real-time online course delivery, but we won't stand in the way if you want to use Teams!

Like Zoom, Teams is a video-conferencing software with built in tools and features like screen sharing, automatic captioning, break-out rooms and more. But it also functions as an asynchronous messaging app outside of real-time meetings. All ECU employees and students have access to the Teams apps on their laptop and phone to use for meetings or online synchronous course delivery.

Teams have many of the same features that Zoom has. You can use it for screen sharing, create breakout rooms (slightly more limited than Zoom) and record classes.

Unlike Zoom, you can use Teams as an asynchronous messaging app. Teams allows you to retain chat history and files that have been shared with your 'team', co-hort or class.

Best Practices

  • Use Teams primarily for live sessions, discussions, and immediate communication.
  • Rely on Moodle for course content, assignments, and assessments.
  • Communicate this distinction clearly to students to avoid confusion.
  • Teams needs more processing power to run optimally than Zoom. If you are experiencing performance issues, it is recommended that you quit other apps and close unnecessary browser tabs to free up ram and processing power.
