Teen Artists Wanted: Unlock Your Creative Potential This Summer at Emily Carr University

There's still time to register for summer teen art programs! Continuing Studies Teen Programs help youth unlock their creative potential. Explore a range of courses taught by industry experts and practitioners.

Teen Programs at Emily Carr University Continuing Studies offer engaging and accessible art, media and design studios for youth aged 13-18.

Through hands-on art-making, students gain access to expert instruction and Emily Carr’s amazing studios, equipment, and community. Whether you're curious about exploring a new medium, honing a craft, or preparing your portfolio for post-secondary education and future creative careers, there's something for you here at ECU Teen Programs.

Featured Programs:

  • Junior Arts Institute (Ages 13-15): A two-week immersive experience focusing on foundational skills designed specifically for youth. Explore 2D and 3D art-making, complete various projects in drawing, painting, animation, and soft sculpture, and culminate your experience with a public exhibition of your work. Sessions: July 2 - 12, 2024, and July 15 - 26, 2024.
  • Summer Institute for Teens (Ages 16-18): A rigorous, month-long program designed for students, preparing you for university applications and future creative careers. Choose from popular disciplines such as drawing, painting, digital illustration, traditional illustration, industrial design, graphic design, and animation. Empower yourself through technical skill development and visionary new forms of expression. Session: July 2 - 26, 2024.

Final Exhibition:

Throughout June and July, the classrooms of ECU are full of creativity and inspiration with young artists creating and experimenting with art across all disciplines.

The programs culminate with an exciting group show on campus, welcoming family, friends and the public. The 2023 programs brought together 150+ talented young artists and designers to exhibit at ECU. The wide range of expressive, inspiring and experimental works thrilled visitors, and included everything from paintings to illustrations to architectural models. More than 400 in-person visitors supported and celebrated this milestone on opening day.

The Summer Institute for Teens (SIT) empowers the next generation of artists and designers to prepare for their creative careers. Over one month, professional artists teach students how to build their portfolios and push their artistic boundaries.

Students can choose from popular disciplines, from painting to graphic design, and develop technical skills while they explore visionary new forms of expression. Students celebrate their achievements through a final public exhibition of student work.

“I appreciated how welcoming, inclusive and kindly we were treated,” describes a Summer Institute for Teens student about the 2023 program. “We were given the chance to create well, being given helpful critiques and ideas on how to fix things. We had open conversations and incredible help with our art.”

    Test the waters with Junior Arts Institute.

    The Junior Arts Institute (JAI) teaches all the most important fundamentals. The program focuses on skill development and the creative process. It also helps prepare younger students for the Summer Institute for Teens.

    Over two weeks, students explore 2D and 3D art-making. They complete a variety of projects in drawing, painting, animation and soft sculpture. The programs culminate with a public exhibition of student work.

    Seats are still open to Drawing + Illustration and Experience + Interaction Design. Experiment with traditional mediums like pen and ink to uncover the world of character design and concept art, or delve into the world of design and technology, captivating interactive and VR experiences. The world is your oyster!

    For students: Ages 13-15

    Schedule: July 2 - 12, 2024, and July 15 - 26, 2024.
