Emily Carr remains the only Canadian university to rank among the top 50 for art and design worldwide.

Emily Carr University has been named one of the top universities in the world for art and design for the fourth year running, according to the 2023 QS World University Rankings.

ECU ranks as the number 25 university in the world for art and design, and is number 11 in North America. It continues to be ranked number one in Canada and is the only Canadian university to be included among the world’s top 50.

“The conversations happening on the ground, here at Emily Carr, are reshaping art and design education on a daily basis with impact across the country and beyond,” says Trish Kelly, Interim President and Vice-Chancellor at ECU. “We are an accessible, public institution punching so far above our weight. Our faculty, staff and students are redefining this place every day, and our grads are at the forefront of art and design spaces internationally. The sheer brilliance and range of this community is staggering. I am hugely proud of all of the people who make up this university and the amazing work that they do.”

ECU's ranking places the university in the company of other celebrated schools including CalArts, the Royal College of Art, the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The annual report from UK-based analytics firm Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranks universities in the art and design category based on academic reputation and employer reputation.
