Another test option for international students applying to ECU.

Emily Carr University welcomes aspiring artists and designers from all across the world. Our students come from more than 50 countries.

Students whose first language is not English must submit a language proficiency score with their applications. There are nine English Language Proficiency tests you can use. The newest is the DET: Duolingo English Test.

Why is an English Language Proficiency Test required?

All courses at ECU are taught in English. Students are required to show that they can learn and study in this language before arrival. There are exceptions to the test requirement, for students from some international schools or programs. You can see the list of exceptions here.

What is the Duolingo English Test?

Duolingo is a popular language-learning app. Millions of people use it to improve their language skills and learn new languages.

The Duolingo English test is a one-hour test that provides you with a certified proficiency score, a video interview, and a writing sample.

ECU requires a minimum score of 110 on the Duolingo English Test. You can see all of our English language score requirements on the Emily Carr Admissions page.

For more information about the Duolingo English Test, visit their website.

Upgrading your English language skills at ECU

ECU also offers a Creative Art Pathway (CAP) Program for international students who don’t meet the English requirement, but have been accepted based on their portfolio and academic scores.

This program provides English proficiency upgrading courses and also allows students to take Emily Carr studio courses.
