Janus is another iteration of artist and ECU faculty member Birthe Piontek's ongoing inquiry into the topics of memory and change.
The photographs in Janus were made in the same corner of Piontek's studio as she explores how an artist can find inspiration in the limitations of a specific space. The notion of transformation is depicted by focusing on objects like fruits, vegetables and flowers – items that are commonly associated with the traditional still life genre.
Join Birthe Piontek in conversation with Chicago-based artist and educator Kelli Connell via Zoom at 11am PST this Saturday, August 28, to learn more about Birthe's practice, and about the works in this stunning new book.
Preorders for Janus are now open as well, for delivery in October, 2021. A range of options is available, including a pairing of the book with a handmade, limited edition print of one of two photos featured in Janus. Visit Gnomic Book online for details.
