Library Upper Level

Starting on Monday, October 7th, the Library will be hosting sensory friendly study evenings on our upper level. Every Monday and Thursday, from 6-8pm, the space will have lowered lighting levels, and users of the space will be asked to remain as quiet as possible.

What to expect:

  • lowered lights on the upper level of the Library, with a variety of table lamps to choose from
  • a selection of neurotools* from the library collection
  • ear plugs and over ear protection
  • a selection of different seating options

Stop by to study, work on a project, or relax.

This study time is designed for neurodiverse students and those with sensory sensitivities, but all are welcome. Please show up scent free if possible.

Sensory sensitivities can include difficulties processing large quantities of sensory (sight, sound, touch, smell, or taste) input at the same time. As our space can often be active and bright, these additional inputs can lead to sensory overload in those who process this information in different ways. This overload can manifest in a variety of ways - discomfort, anxiety, meltdowns, or exhaustion.

In our environment, the easiest variables to change are lighting and sound levels - which when lowered can hopefully provide a more inclusive environment for those who need it.

We will be available to take suggestions on ways to make the space work better for everyone. If you can’t make it, please email us with your ideas and suggestions.

*NeuroTools are tools that can support anyone, but are built with special consideration for neurodiverse folks. These tools include fidgets, sensory supports, and brain aids. All tools are available to checkout from the Library for a period of 7 days.
