In Defence of Glitches. A talk about our relationship with unforeseen occurrences in education, art design and technology. Facilitated and moderated by Katherine Gillieson.
1pm to 2pm Workshop with Ernesto Peña (The Hub C3235)
A primer on databending and transmediation. This workshop focuses on transmediation through databending using ‘the white square’, giving participants the basic principles of using glitch techniques for data manipulation and transmediation. Please bring a laptop if you are planning to attend, and check with Katherine Gillieson before joining the workshop as numbers are limited!

Reyhan Yazdani is an is an interdisciplinary artist and designer and assistant professor in Foundation and Design at ECU, whose work migrates between a range of media including works on paper, objects, social invitations, and poetry to engage with ontological, material and spatial inquiries about themes of exile, language, and diaspora.
9:30 Garnet Hertz | Research Creation and Alternative Modes of Knowledge Production
Garnet Hertz, Canada Research Chair and Fulbright recipient, explores DIY culture, electronic art, and critical design; his work has been exhibited in 18 countries, featured in The New York Times, Wired, and CNN, and honored with awards like Best Paper at CHI.
9:50 Bonne Zabolotney | Canadian Design and its Question of/Questionable History
Dr. Bonne Zabolotney (she/her) is a full professor at Emily Carr University and a design studies practitioner. She consults with arts groups to provide research, facilitation, and organizational strategy and design. She is also the General Editor for Bloomsbury Design Library.

Haig Armen explores the space between design, technology and music.
Most of his research centres around creating new physical musical
instruments but also explores the merging of physical and digital
spaces.
11:00 Jihyun Park | Data by Me, You, and Us: Exploring Transformable Data for Eco-Social Changes
Jihyun Park is an information designer and researcher pursuing a PhD at SFU, focusing on design and social practices for community collaboration, sustainability, and ecological well-being, with teaching roles at Northeastern and Emily Carr University.
