Gavin Lynch | Letting go is hard | Opening Reception

Alumnus Gavin Lynch's latest exhibition pays tribute to the places he's lived.
Toronto's Angell Gallery is currently hosting alumnus Gavin Lynch's solo exhibit, Letting go is hard. Lynch's dreamy combination of collage and paint creates fantastical but very real landscapes that draw from the places he's called home, namely western Quebec and the wilderness of British Columbia. Lynch's work excels at setting and then thwarting expectations, offering work centered around Canadian geography that evokes familiarity but is entirely new. One can't help but be struck by the bold colours, mesmerizing patterns, and varying depths Lynch uses to depict the scenes of nature. By painting his new surroundings, Lynch ensures that Letting go is hard is a relatable tribute to the feelings surrounding relocation; capturing both the vacuum left by closing a chapter in one's life and the eclipsing sensation of the hope that accompanies starting anew.
