Join us for a launch hosted by READ Books and Publication Studio for Finchwell Finchwell Finchwell Finchwell and Osborn, a new edition by artist Garry Neill Kennedy. In this edition, Kennedy presents a selection of cartoons about the workplace culled from Collier's, an American magazine (1888 - 1957) that was known for its interest in social reform.

"A single copy of this book accompanied the Finchwell Revisited 1985/2016 work that I made as part of the Vancouver Special: Ambivalent Pleasures exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 2016. I always intended to have it available as a multiple and in distribution, so I'm delighted that we're launching it now.

Back in the early 1980s a guy came by my office, I can't remember who, and dropped off a stack of Collier's magazines known for its interest in social reform. I leafed through and found that there were a lot of cartoons about the workplace. I started cutting them out. In 1985, when I had a show at Eye Level Gallery, a space that could have formerly been a business office, I guessed at what would have been the receptionist area, the office pool, the boss's office, etc, and arranged the cutout cartoons in those spaces. For the book, I've made sections with cartoons staged in each of these locations.

The colour of the book is the same yellow I used for my work, The Suit (47 yellow paintings representing each of the pattern pieces used to make a man's suit), Finchwell Continued, and Shouting Heads. I then used this 'Imperial Yellow', thinking of it as Boss Yellow. At the time, I was the President of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. I was the boss."
